Jack's Movie Reviews

Jack's Movie Reviews is predominantly a YouTube channel that is dedicated to exploring what is great about filmmaking. As far back as I can remember, I have always had a passion for learning about and watching as many films as I could. When I was in High School, this passion developed into criticism, as I started to write about movies. Every week I would watch 5 classic movies, and give my thoughts on them. Eventually I felt like I understood what makes a movie great and started to focus more on new theatrical releases. Given the success of others, thought like YouTube was the best medium to explore these different new releases, and I was wrong. There are hundreds if not THOUSANDS of people who make videos talking about the latest movies in theaters. In full honesty I didn’t have the resources (time, money, and equipment) to make videos that could compete with professionals who were able to see movies early at press screenings, so I made a transition, I started to focus on videos that explore the art behind filmmaking.

In February of 2016 I started to release 1 video a week that explores different aspects of filmmaking. Sometimes I look at technique, and what filmmakers do to create atmosphere, drama, horror, comedy, and suspense. Other times, I explore moral questions that films bring up.

Writing, narrating, and editing these videos has grown from a pastime into a passion. Whenever I have extra time on my hands I am either watching a movie and taking notes, writing out a transcript, or editing one of the videos.

If you consider yourself to be a cinephile, then this is a channel for you, a lot of the videos I make are very opinionated, and I love nothing more than reading conversations down in the comments and participating in as many as I can. At its best film as an art form challenges viewers to think, ask questions, and explore morality. If my videos can do one thing and one thing only, it is to start the conversation.

Can you do a video on ______ movie?
Yes, I can, but that doesn’t mean I will, I have a very strict schedule, my videos are usually thought of weeks or sometimes months ahead. I love talking about movies that people request, but I don’t love reworking my schedule to fit these requests. As it stands now, if you request a video, and it is a movie that I think lends itself to conversation, I would love nothing more than to talk about it, but it may not be released for a few weeks or months.

I noticed this problem in one of your videos…
I know that, at the end of the day, I only have a few days to research these videos, write them, and edit them, I am one person working on videos part time, there are going to be small mistakes in them.
